After you file, you DON'T own it instantly. There's a protection period (like a probation) before the mark is officially yours.
Submit to UK IPO online (£170 first class + £50 per extra class). You get an application number immediately. You can start using the ™ symbol straight away — that's the "unregistered" mark.
UK IPO examines your application. They check it doesn't clash with existing marks, isn't too generic, and meets all formal requirements. If there are issues, they write to you and you have time to respond.
Your mark is published in the Trade Marks Journal. ANYONE can oppose it during this 2-month window. This is the "probation" period. If nobody opposes, you're through. If someone does oppose, it goes to a hearing (could add 12-18 months). Most marks pass without opposition.
If no opposition, your trademark is officially registered. You can now use the ® symbol. Valid for 10 years from filing date. Renewable indefinitely in 10-year blocks (£200 renewal, rising to £245 from April 2026).
Total time from filing to owning: ~4-5 months (if no opposition). Your cover starts from the filing date though — so if someone copies you during the probation, your registration backdates to day 0.
File a provisional patent for £60 to lock your priority date. You then have 12 months to decide if you want full protection (which costs more). The provisional is your insurance policy.
